"This generation is so addicted to their cell phones! They do not have time for anything else, whether they are travelling, eating lunch or even watching TV, they seem to be looking at it all the time!"
Yes, I belong to the cell phone generation. Cell phones are the new TV. It is entertaining, its easy-to-use, its there whenever we need it and yes, I am addicted. More often than not, I use or access my cell phone to avoid confrontations, utterly uncalled for conversations, akward moments, and sometimes to just pretend that I have got things to do :-)
8 years ago, my typical commute from Gujarat to Bangalore lasted 36 hours. Back then, I had one of those regular Nokia 9770 cell phones with no internet. I used to dread my train journey not because I used to travel alone, but from the thought of travelling with the middle-aged aunties. Don't get me wrong, they are generally not too much trouble on their own, but couple them with their I-know-it-all attitude and their right to judge you is something that gets to me.
At times like those, I used to try and keep to myself rather than offering myself (and my life story, why did u move to bangalore, why are you working, why aren't you married yet) as a feeder for food (thought) for the rest of the journey. Most of the time, I was unsuccessful and will find myself in the throes of discussions I did not even care about. How I wish I had a cell phone (with 4G) that could entertain me and keep those aunties at bay!
I am now married and have a family to show for:-) and yet I find myself turning on a cell phone whenever I want to avoid being dragged into a conversation in which my opinion would not count. The trouble with our older generation is that they mostly do not care about our opinions. Their so-called conversations are typically one sided and you are only expected to agree. Well, honestly older-generation, I prefer to keep my trap shut rather than nod my head in agreement to your opinions and oh yes, I am still old fashioned and do not want to sound rude, enter my cell phone. I might look like I do not enjoy a conversation but well it does not hurt you as bad as the fact that your opinion is not really the only thing there is.
Really, really I am addicted to my cell phone and I do not miss a thing in life (not unless I want to!).
